EU Migration Agreement: A solidarity mechanism & strengthening of border controls

Screening control at the borders is introduced for third-country nationals

Newsroom June 10 07:00

The participants in the EU Council of Interior Ministers in Luxembourg reached an agreement on a solidarity mechanism for countries facing intense migratory pressures, such as Greece.

The agreement establishes the relocation of illegal immigrants and the regulations concerning the strengthening of controls at the EU borders (screening and Eurodac data).

Greece is represented by the Minister of Immigration and Asylum Notis Mitarakis.

French Interior Minister and President-in-Office of the Council Gerard Darmanin spoke of a “historic agreement” which is an important step towards the adoption of the Asylum and Immigration Pact.

The French Interior Minister announced on twitter that the two regulations on strengthening the EU’s border protection and on the solidarity mechanism that will help Member States facing high immigration pressures, received the support of the vast majority of Member States.

Mr Darmanin also announced that in the coming days the French Presidency of the EU and the European Commission would hold a meeting on the “solidarity platform” to give concrete substance to this historic agreement.
