A beautifully worked extra-time goal was finished off by Brazil’s talisman Neymar to give the South Americans the lead and surely seal the game.

But Croatia, finalists in Russia four years ago, refused to lie down and dramatically equalised through Bruno Petkovic in the 117th minute to take the game to penalties. It was Croatia’s first shot on target all game.

Croatia were flawless in the shootout, while Dominik Livakovic saved Rodrygo’s spot-kick and Marquinhos hit the post.
