The President of the Russian Republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, caused a sensation with provocative statements in an interview with Russian state television. Kadyrov suggested that the Russian army should invade East Germany (a territory of the former GDR). “This is our territory”, while also threatening German Chancellor Olaf Scholz with a beating.
Kadyrov said on TV channel Rossiya-1 that the withdrawal of Russian troops from what is now East Germany (former East Germany) in the 1990s was a mistake. And added: “Gorbachev or whoever has withdrawn our troops from there. The Germans should have been punished as traitors to understand their place. We must return there, it is our territory.”
Ukrainian politician Anton Gerashchenko shared the excerpt from the video on Twitter. He wrote: “Attention, Germany! Kadyrov says East Germany is their territory and they should return there.”
In the interview, Kadyrov also ranted against German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He visited the Russian president and said he was “soft as a panda bear”. Now he speaks from the lectern with hate speech about Russia. Scholz should be “punched in the face,” Kadyrov said. The reason for the verbal attack could be the deliveries of main battle tanks to Ukraine announced by Germany.

The Chechen leader was also convinced that Russia can achieve its goals in Ukraine by the end of the year. According to Kadyrov, Russia has the power to take the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, the second largest city of Kharkiv, and the main port city of Odessa. He also stressed that it would be wrong to negotiate with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We are showing results that the West, the NATO countries and the EU cannot even dream of,” said Kadyrov. And he promised his followers: “We will break through and conquer Poland.”
Kadyrov is known for his brutal leadership style in Chechnya in the North Caucasus. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he has become one of the most ardent supporters of the war and has sent his own troops to Ukraine.
