Train accident – Death toll rises to 57

The Larissa Coroner said the services were extracting DNA from parts of bodies

Newsroom March 2 08:21

The death toll from the tragic train accident in Tempi outside Larissa now stands at 57, according to what was stated by the head of the forensic service of Larissa, Rubini Leontari. Speaking to a radio station (Real FM), the medical examiner noted that 14 charred bodies have been transferred to the morgue, while 7 were transferred yesterday.

Rubini Leontari also said that the bags with human parts in the morgue have exceeded 10. “We have taken DNA from dismembered parts of bodies, so some members that may belong to a dismembered body will be assigned to the body, some members that will not belong to a body, we will have their DNA,” she noted, commenting on the identification process.

“Identification is not the work of medical examiners. Of course, we are helping, but it is the responsibility of the laboratory of Civil Protection’s specialised group for mass disasters. We have information that the DNA laboratory investigation is progressing. We already have, so far, 14 complete results, which are in the process of identification by the competent person”, emphasised Ms. Leontari.
