Nationwide strike in Greece over train crash underway (photos)

Traffic police have set in place movement restrictions in Athens

Newsroom March 16 11:26

The unions are proceeding with a new round of strike mobilizations today on the occasion of the tragedy in Tempi. Both the public and private sectors participate in the strike.

The unions demand that the real culprits responsible for the fatal train crash in Larissa be identified and brought to justice and that all necessary safety measures be taken so that Greece mourns no other victims.

In the 24-hour strike over the Larissa train crash at Tempi announced by GSEE, the Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions (ADEDY), and EKA for Thursday (16/3) bus, metro, electric, and tram workers will participate in work stoppages.

Nothing will be moving for 24 hours, while Mass Transportation in Attica will operate at specific times, in order to accommodate those citizens who want to participate in the demonstrations.

The centre of Athens is closed, according to an official statement from Traffic Police.

Workers in the private sector and DEKOs, in Health, Education, Local Government, tax offices, urban planning, Citizen Service Centers, and insurance funds, as well as pensioners’ organizations, are taking part in the mobilisation.

The main strike gathering by the GSEE and the Athens Labour Centre will take place at 11 am in Syntagma. ADEDY is protesting in rally at the same time in Klathmonos Square.

PAME called its members to gather at 11:30 in Propylaia.

Bus workers will participate in the nationwide strike with work stoppages. Specifically, according to the OASA Workers’ Union, workers will stop work from the start of traffic until 9:00 am. and from 21:00 until the end of traffic. The exit of the vehicles from the depots will be at 8:30 am.

Itineraries are normally expected to run on the lines assigned to KTEL.

Due to a union strike, Lines 1, 2, and 3 of the Metro and the Tram will operate from 10 am to 3 pm.

During this period of operation of the Metro Lines, by order of EL.AS, the stations “SYNTAGMA”, “PANEPISTIMIO” and “OMONOIA” will remain closed and the trains will pass through them without making a stop.
