Elections 2023 – Mitsotakis: “Absolute majority does not mean unchecked governance, but rather effective”

Ιn case of lack of a strong mandate "the way would be opened for new problems"

Newsroom May 28 06:00

Kyriakos Mitsotakis spoke about “four years of major changes” if he achieves self-reliance on June 25 in an interview with “Kathimerini tis Kyriaki” and Alexis Papachelas.

He noted that a one-party government is not a unchecked government.

Mr. Mitsotakis added that he will not allow tomorrow’s ministers, but also himself, to get above themselves.

He emphasized, however, that if absolute majority is not achieved – which he said there is no other option – the way could be opened for new problems for the country.

He noted that after the election, Nikos Androulakis showed that he wants to turn PASOK to the left and excludes any case of government cooperation with New Democracy.

At the same time, the winner of the May 21 elections reiterated that he will under no circumstances cooperate with the parties and factions that are “on the right” of the New Democracy.

The President of New Democracy added that, “by 2027 we will be talking about a completely different Greece and that is my ambition. I have no intention of going on record as an ‘administrative’ Prime Minister. I know that we have a very big opportunity. I know what the citizens ask of us”.

Turkey: A pirouette, not a pivot – Analysis

Asked about the Turkish elections he said that “I don’t have a preference, but even if I had I could never express it publicly. There is a favorite, that much is clear. But beyond that I am not at all sure that whoever is elected there will be any drastic change in Turkey’s foreign policy”.

Regarding the future relations with Ankara he stated that “the only issue we can discuss with Turkey and possibly go to The Hague as well, is the delimitation of maritime zones, i.e. EEZ and continental shelf. All other issues cannot be discussed, it’s as simple as that. The issue of demilitarization and obviously all issues concerning Greek sovereignty over the Aegean islands are off the agenda. It is something that Turkey must realize, otherwise we simply will not be able to move forward”.
