Britain: Thousands of patients will receive personalized cancer vaccines

Their purpose is to prepare the immune system to identify and eliminate any lingering cancer cells, thus lowering the chances of recurrence

Newsroom May 31 07:12

Thousands of cancer patients in England are set to have access to a new type of treatment that utilizes personalized vaccines to combat cancer. Thirty hospitals in Great Britain are already expected to participate in this specific cancer vaccination program, according to the BBC.

These vaccines utilize mRNA technology, similar to that used in Covid vaccines. They are designed to prime the immune system to recognize and destroy any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of disease recurrence. Elliot Pfebve, aged 55, is the first patient to undergo treatment with a personalized vaccine against colorectal cancer in England. He received the vaccine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

“I am excited. I did some research about the treatment. If successful, it would be a medical breakthrough,” he said, adding, “It could help thousands, if not millions of people, to have hope and perhaps not go through what I did.”

Following his initial treatment, Elliot’s tests revealed that he still had cancer DNA nuclei, a fact that puts patients at an increased risk of recurrence.

What is personalized cancer vaccine?

Vaccines are usually designed for disease prevention. However, these specific cancer vaccines are not intended as preventive treatment but are used from the moment someone is diagnosed. Like conventional vaccines, they prepare the immune system to seek out an enemy, in this case, the patient’s cancer.

Elliot is among the first in England to receive a personalised cancer vaccine as part of a trial aimed at helping cancer patients.

If successful, these vaccines might one day prevent a patients cancer from returning or spreading.

A sample of Elliot’s tumor was sent to BioNTech labs in Germany, where up to 20 cancer-related mutations were identified. Using this information, a vaccine was created using mRNA technology containing instructions to be given to Elliot’s cells to produce proteins tailored to his cancer cells.

The vaccine reveals the cancer cells capable of hiding in the body, only to reappear later. The goal is for the vaccine to prepare the immune system to seek out and destroy any remaining traces of cancer, thus improving the chances of being cancer-free in the coming years.
