At least 10 people were evacuated at dawn from an apartment building above the “Broadway (Broadway)” theater arcade in Athens after a fire broke out in a basement cafe located inside the historic arcade.
Initially 20 firefighters with 5 vehicles were rushed to the area, but when they arrived they called for reinforcements as the fire had taken hold in the basement space, while the smoke had filled the apartment building located directly above the arcade.
The fire did not spread to the apartments in the block of flats, however there was a problem due to the heavy smoke.
A total of 32 firefighters with 8 fire engines, one of them a staircase truck – that is, with a ladder – rushed to the scene, while firefighters lowered people from the first floor of the apartment building, using stairs to the balconies.
At the same time, police closed St. Meletius, in the section from Patision to September 3.
Firefighters extricated at least 10 people.
Reports from the Open, say the theater has been burnt to the ground as the fire has been burning for over 6 hours.
