The 19-year-old group leader of an eight-year-old girl who was found dead in a camp pool in Halkidiki, but also the 34-year-old “leader” of the camp. Both of them were released with an oral order of the prosecutor.
Xyesterday, Tuesday, the 19-year-old group leader of the eight-year-old was arrested, who was in charge of the group the child was in, while the 34-year-old was taken to the Cassandra Police Station in the early hours of today on the same charge and released pending trial.
Meanwhile, shortly before 10 am the autopsy – autopsy was completed at The Forensic Directorate of Thessaloniki for the death of the 8-year-old girl and the findings “showed” that she died from drowning.
It is recalled that the camp issued a statement on the death of the 8-year-old girl, stressing that “We will assist in every way in the investigation of the circumstances.”

“On Tuesday, August 13, after lunch was completed and the campers were in their rooms for their midday rest, it was discovered that a camper was missing. Camp headquarters was immediately notified and a team of staff members began searching for her on the camp grounds.
The camper was found in the pool unconscious. The camper was given first aid using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator by camp medical staff and the ambulance, which was immediately called to the site.
An ambulance transported the camper to the Kassandra Health Center and then to the Thessaloniki AHEPA Hospital where her death was determined. We would like to express our deep sorrow for the loss of our camper and we will assist in every way the authorities to investigate the circumstances of the accident.”

According to the MEGA report, there is also a version that the girl left the room at the time of the dive and went and dived into the pool alone, when the lifeguard was not there.

In a statement to ERT, the 8-year-old girl’s grandfather, Angelos Kazazis, said: “We have had no information from the camp. I asked if they had a lifeguard and they said they did. And how did you get rid of the child? No one answered.”
For her part, Cassandra Mayor Anastasia Halkia said: “The ambulance arrived quickly at the scene and tried with the means they had to save him. Then they transported it to the Health Center, intubated it and brought it to AHEPA and from what I heard it did not end well. I want to offer my condolences to the parents.”

How the tragedy happened

The children got out of the pool, which has a lifeguard, went to lunch and when they returned to the tents for naptime, a count was taken. The girl’s absence was noticed when the group leader in charge began to count the children from the tents.
At that time, an alarm was raised throughout the camp and an operation was launched to locate the child. Sadly, however, he was found dead in the pool shortly afterwards, with the circumstances of the exact cause under investigation. According to the same information, the Greek police were alerted at 15.30 by the ambulance service, which had already rushed to the camp with two ambulances and a doctor’s escort. Despite the superhuman efforts of the doctors and ambulance crews, the child did not regain consciousness.
The eight-year-old girl was transported intubated from the Health Center of Kassandria to the hospital AHEPA in Thessaloniki, where at 19.00 it was officially determined that she died.
