Electric scooters, bicycles, vehicle tires, mugs, plastic bottles, stools and even an umbrella stand were “fished” Tuesday morning by divers who dove into the Thermal Gulf, at the height of the White Tower, in Thessaloniki.
In fact, towards the end of the cleanup, a motorbike was found and recovered from the bottom of Thermaikos.
The garbage that polluted the marine environment was collected in the framework of an underwater cleaning action that took place on the beach of Thessaloniki. 30 divers dived into the waters of Thermaikos, at a depth of 5 meters and a distance of up to 20 meters from the shore, in order to clean the underwater area from what some unscrupulous people have thrown in the sea, from the area in front of the White Tower to the 1st pier of the port.
“We find too much waste, we find plastics which unfortunately don’t break down. There are too many metals that rust. The tragic thing we see, apart from the glasses and electric bicycles, is that we find too many batteries,” said among others in a statement the general manager of MEPP, Sotiris Nikolaou, who is involved in the clean-up.
The cleaning of the seabed of Thermaikos was carried out in the framework of an underwater cleaning action initiated by PPA S.A. in cooperation with MEPP (Mediterranean Company Environmental Protection) and with the support of Antipollution of V Group, Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), Hellenic Environmental Center S.A. (HEC), Hill International, Optima Bank, Rogan Associates, Alpha Bank, TIF – Helexpo, Samaras & Partners.
The action was held under the auspices of: the Ministry of Shipping & Island Policy, the Ministry of Interior (Sector Macedonia-Thrace), the Region of Central Macedonia, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the Hellenic Ports Association (ELME).
