The adoption by the European Commission of the Implementing Decision approving the Union’s financial contribution to the implementation of the “Independent Natural Gas System (ASFA) Alexandroupolis”, within the framework of the Operational Programme EPANEK 2014- 2020, announced the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis.
The total eligible cost through ESPA for the completion of the project is set at 202,265,539 euros.
In particular, the European Commission, having previously examined the data provided by the Managing Authority of the Competitiveness Programme, concluded that the European financial contribution for the project, selected by the Special Service, was fully justified.
The EU Decision marks the recognition of the importance of the project both for the strengthening of Greece’s role and prospects as a hub for energy transport in the wider region, and as a source for the country’s energy supply with natural gas.
The opening of the Alexandroupolis LNG Terminal is expected on 1 October 2024.
