Evros Fence: German Christian Democrats call for EU funding

Change of stance by the German party leading in all polls - CDU leader stressed that border security is "a task that concerns us all"

Newsroom October 1 04:53

Funding of the Evros fence at the Greek-Turkish borders with European funds is now being called for by the German Christian Democrats.

The change of stance came through the mouth of Alexander Throm, who is the lead MP on home affairs.

“I expect the federal government and the European Commission to ensure that we do not abandon states at the external borders, such as Poland and Greece,” he told Euractiv.

According to the German MEP, this is “a task that concerns us all. And anyone who wants secure borders must also commit to fortifying the borders.” This includes supporting “structural and technical border protection where necessary”.

Note that the proposed European Commissioner for Migration comes from Austria, which is a pro-funding country.

On Thursday, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will visit Evros.
