For World Health Day 2024 and its 76th anniversary, the World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen the theme “My Health, My Right,” addressing key global issues such as diseases, wars, and climate change. These challenges, including air pollution and natural disasters, are some of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, contributing to today’s global health crisis.
The WHO highlights the interconnectedness of extreme weather events, food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate change. As part of its efforts to raise awareness and promote action, WHO’s Director of Environment, Climate Change, and Health, Dr. Maria Neira, will speak at TEDxAthens 2024, a platform for exchanging ideas, with this year’s theme, “X Machina,” emphasizing innovative solutions to modern challenges.
Dr. Maria Neira’s Expertise
Dr. Neira, an endocrinologist and public health expert, has a distinguished career, including roles as Spain’s Deputy Health Minister and leader in international organizations. She has received numerous accolades, such as the French National Order of Merit and recognition as one of the top 100 most influential people in global health and climate change policies.
Addressing the Climate Crisis
In a recent interview, Dr. Neira emphasized the urgency of climate action, warning that extreme weather events, including heatwaves, floods, and droughts, are occurring with increasing frequency. The world is already experiencing the severe consequences of climate change, with more than 60,000 heat-related deaths in Europe in 2022 alone.
Air pollution, closely tied to climate change, affects nearly everyone on the planet, with 99% of the global population exposed to dangerous levels. Each year, air pollution contributes to around 7 million deaths globally, exacerbating chronic illnesses such as heart and lung diseases.
The Role of Technology and Influencers
Dr. Neira also highlighted the importance of combating misinformation around climate change. Influencers, with their large platforms, can play a vital role in spreading accurate information and driving public engagement on environmental issues.
A Call for Global Action
To combat the health impacts of climate change, Dr. Neira encourages collective action. Simple lifestyle changes, like adopting plant-based diets, reducing energy consumption, and supporting local businesses, can contribute to global solutions. She also calls for governments to prioritize climate action and reduce harmful emissions.
The WHO continues to lead initiatives for climate resilience in health systems and supports countries facing extreme weather conditions, providing medical supplies and mobile units to areas affected by natural disasters.
