Weather update: Storm “Cassandra” to change conditions – When and where the storms will hit

The weather pattern is set to change again as the storm system Cassandra, forming in the central Mediterranean, is expected to impact Greece from Friday afternoon. This was reported by Thodoris Kolydas, director of the National Meteorological Service (EMY), on social media.

According to Kolydas, heavy rain and strong winds will initially affect the Northern Ionian Sea and Epirus, and by evening, the rest of the Ionian Islands, western Central Greece, and northwestern Peloponnese will experience potentially severe weather.

Cassandra is forming over the Gulf of Genoa on Thursday, affecting Italy and the northwest Balkans with heavy rain, strong winds, and coastal events. The storm will move east-northeast, reaching Greece by Friday.

In the west, clouds will bring local rain, especially in the Northern Ionian and Epirus, where sporadic thunderstorms will occur before easing by the evening. The rest of the country will see clear skies, with only temporary clouds in parts of Western Macedonia, central Greece, and northern Peloponnese, where local showers may develop. Visibility will be limited in the morning, especially in the eastern mainland and the northern Aegean Sea.

Winds will blow from the south at 3-5 Beaufort, reaching up to 6 in the Ionian Sea. In the Dodecanese, winds will be from the northwest at 3-4 Beaufort. Temperatures will rise slightly, ranging from 24-27°C in the north and 27-30°C in other regions, with island temperatures at 25-28°C.

Forecast for Friday: Western Greece will see increased cloud cover with rain and isolated thunderstorms. The rain will begin in Corfu and Epirus at midday and will extend to the rest of the Ionian islands, western Central Greece, and northwestern Peloponnese by evening. Some storms may be intense. Elsewhere, some clouds will appear, mostly in central and northern areas. Morning fog may form in northern inland regions, and African dust is expected.Winds will be from the south at 4-6 Beaufort, reaching up to 7 locally in the Ionian. Temperatures will rise slightly, reaching 27-31°C.
