Vasilis Kikilias, the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, announced that 831 new hires will strengthen the Fire Department in 2025.
“In just one year, we have nearly tripled the number of forest commando units. We continue to bolster the Fire Department with 831 hires, including forest commandos, graduates of the Fire Academy, and general-duty firefighters,” he stated.

The minister highlighted that these hirings are part of the new strategy for tackling forest fires, modernizing the Fire Department, and addressing needs arising from the implementation of the AIGIS program.
Specifically, for 2025, the following will be recruited:
- All graduates of the Fire Academy
- 70 probationary lieutenants
- 260 probationary firefighters
- 300 forest firefighters for further staffing of the Special Forest Operations Units (EMODE)
- 150 general-duty firefighters
- 8 helicopter operators
- 15 ship pilots
- 10 doctors
- 15 engineers
- 3 employees for state aid programs
