The Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, has requested urgent evaluations for the reorganization of military hospitals, based on the forthcoming legislative regulations, from the Chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (NDGS), General Dimitrios Houpis.
With this move, Dendias is signaling his intention to ensure that those responsible for the medical errors uncovered at the 424 Military Hospital in Thessaloniki are held accountable. At the same time, he is preparing the ground for the implementation of the legislative framework promoted by the draft bill, which is already with the government’s secretariat and is expected to be presented to Parliament, most likely after the holidays.
According to information, the urgent evaluations will also lead to the removal of generals from the Medical Services Directorate. It is also noted that the administrations of other military hospitals are under scrutiny.
The same sources suggest that new appointments for the leadership of military hospitals and the Medical Services Directorate will be made from officers at the rank of colonel.
As previously reported by protothema.gr, the forthcoming regulations include the establishment of a supervisory framework for military hospitals, modeled on the healthcare institutions of the National Health System (ESY).
