Lesvos: Coastguard injured during a chase of a speedboat carrying illegal migrants

The two pilots of the speedboat were arrested - In subsequent searches, 30 foreigners were arrested

In the midday hours of Thursday, a Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boat, which was on a scheduled patrol, spotted a speedboat disembarking foreigners on board in the sea area of Agrilia, Lesvos. Subsequently, the speedboat developed high speed heading towards the Turkish coast. The Coast Guard vessel tried to stop the speedboat using light and sound signals, with negative results.

A pursuit ensued, during which the speedboat performed dangerous maneuvers and attempted to ram the Coast Guard vessel. In the process, the speedboat struck the Coast Guard vessel sideways, injuring one of its crew members.

Subsequently, the speedboat was immobilized and its two foreign operators, aged 31 and 25, were arrested. A second coast guard boat was dispatched to the spot, in order to transport the injured man to the port of Mytilene, from where he was taken by an ambulance vehicle of the ambulance service and transferred to the General Hospital of Mytilene “Vostaneio”, for the provision of first aid.

In land searches carried out in the wider area by members of Hellenic police 30 foreigners, who were transferred to the Kara Tepe “Mavrovouni”. The Central Port Authority of Mytilene, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, seized the means of transport and a knife with a 10 cm long ejector blade. The 25-year-old carrying it was arrested.
