The tennis world has grown accustomed to Novak Djokovic’s successes, but what is happening in his matches against Gaël Monfils is unprecedented.
Nole extended his winning streak against the Frenchman to 20-0, easily defeating him 2-0 in sets (6-3, 6-3), and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International Cup, on his way to his 100th career title.
This was the 20th win in as many matches for the Olympic gold medalist from Paris, against Monfils, who, in 20 years of competition (since 2005), has never tasted victory against the Serbian.
“My game fits very well against his,” Djokovic said with a smile, and added regarding his record of wins against Monfils: “To some extent, the more you win against someone, the happier you are to face them.”
It’s worth noting that the next longest winning streak between two players is Rafael Nadal’s 18-0 record against Richard Gasquet.
The Serbian tennis star holds 24 Grand Slam titles, the most in that category, and aims to become the leader in overall titles. The current leader in that list is Jimmy Connors, with 109 titles, who retired from tennis in 1996 at the age of 43.
