The Independent Public Revenue Authority, by decision of Governor Giorgos Pitsilis, is upgrading the organizational structure of Nea Orestiada, Komotini, Xanthi, and Drama and strengthening their control role at the border crossings with the Greek-Bulgarian border.
In particular, from 1/1/2025, the above were operating as “B’ Class” (level of Independent Department), was upgraded to “A—B Class” (level of Directorate with two Departments) and strengthened with the establishment and operation of a new Department based at border crossings and with responsibilities of “Smuggling Suppression. “
The strengthening of customs controls at the Greek-Bulgarian crossings:
– contributes to the expansion of the operational capacity for the surveillance of freight flows throughout the territory,
– concentrates on the areas at risk of criminality (land borders, central transport hubs), as they are formed based on the particular geomorphological characteristics of our country,
– improve the execution of controls on important road axes in terms of freight traffic to combat smuggling in the movement of Special Consumption Tax (SST) products.
The above organizational upgrade is deemed necessary to:
– to guarantee the security of citizens and economic operators, both in our country and in the European Union;
– combating smuggling, after the full integration of Bulgaria into the Schengen area and the consequent lifting of controls on persons at the Greek-Bulgarian land border.
