A member of the Coast Guard was injured on Wednesday morning (January 8) at the port of Mytilene, during the arrival of the ferry from Piraeus-Chios-Mytilene, when a driver hit him in an attempt to avoid a check.
The Coast Guard officer, a K9 handler, signaled to the driver disembarking from the ferry with his car for a routine check. However, the driver accelerated, hit the officer, and attempted to flee towards the surrounding road near the castle, where he got trapped in the nearby archaeological site.
The driver, originally from Agrinio, was then arrested, and burglary tools were found in his possession. It was later revealed that he had been convicted of thefts and other crimes and was a fugitive.
The Coast Guard officer was transferred to Mytilene Hospital, where he is being treated for a leg fracture and a brain injury, which, however, does not raise concern.
