An unusual duo in a moment of merriment, at a time when it’s not really appropriate. That’s the image Barack Obama and Donald Trump painted as they attended, along with President Biden and other high-profile guests, the funeral of Jimmy Carter.
The two former presidents were seated next to each other at the funeral of the former president, who died in late December at the age of 100.
Before the ceremony began, cameras caught them talking and even Barack Obama laughing at something the president-elect said to him.
Their conversation apparently did not go unnoticed by Vice President Kamala Harris, who was sitting in front of them. The vice president gave them a stern look, which was also caught on camera.
Trump, who arrived at the church first, was accompanied by his wife Melania. He greeted his former vice president Mike Pence with a handshake, a move that was also commented on because their relationship since leaving the White House in 2021 has been dismal and they have had at least no public contact.
Barack Obama arrived alone, without his wife Michelle.
Next to them were George Bush and his wife Laura, and Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton.
Carter, who died at the age of 100, was the oldest living former president in the United States.
