Commission: €120 million in humanitarian aid to Gaza following ceasefire agreement

Aid aims to address the "catastrophic situation" in Gaza - Crisis Management Commissioner meets Palestinian Prime Minister

Newsroom January 16 03:37

The European Commission today announced €120 million in humanitarian aid for the Lebanon Gaza Strip, following yesterday’s announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas.

The target of the aid is to address the “devastating situation” in Gaza, a European Commission spokesman said during a daily briefing for journalists in Brussels.

It is mainly planned to provide emergency food aid, medical assistance, and equipment to improve access to drinking water, according to a Commission statement.

Already, some 3,800 tons of humanitarian aid has also been flown in to help the population of Gaza.

The EU welcomed the announcement of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza yesterday and said today that it hoped it would allow “better access to humanitarian aid” and that this “aid will be effectively distributed to those who need it,” another Commission spokesman stressed in response to a question during the press briefing.

The Commissioner in charge of Crisis Management, Haja Lahbib, met today in Brussels with the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohamed Mustafa.

“We discussed the enormous needs in Gaza and the West Bank and the means to respond to them,” the Commissioner noted in a post on social media X, in which she clarified that she would be travelling to the Palestinian territories soon.
