“Alarm” from Turkish professor: Three of the four signs of a volcanic eruption have happened in Santorini

"If the eruption is accompanied by an earthquake, the quakes could create tsunami waves that will affect the Aegean Islands, the Peloponnese, Crete, and the coastal zone of the Tekke Peninsula in Turkey," says Dr. Ogün Ahmet Erçan

Turkish geophysics professor Dr. Ogün Ahmet Erçan discussed the earthquakes in Santorini in a post on the “X” platform, highlighting the potential dangers these seismic tremors could cause on nearby islands, confirming that they originate from the volcano.

“For several days now, small earthquakes and tremors of magnitude M4.8 Richter have been occurring in the Aegean Sea on the island of Santorini. The focal depth of the earthquakes and seismic activity ranges between 1 and 5 kilometers, indicating that the ground vibrations are of volcanic origin. Before an eruption related to magma, a pressure increase of 250 bars, originating from the magma chamber, will attempt to penetrate the Earth’s crust and erupt at a temperature of 2,200 degrees Celsius,” writes Dr. Ogün Ahmet Erçan.

“If a silicate lava erupts, it could also lead to volcanic bombs. If the eruption is accompanied by an earthquake, quakes ranging from M5 to M7 could create tsunami waves. These waves could affect the Aegean Islands, the Peloponnese, Crete, and the coastal zone of the Tekke Peninsula in Turkey. Villages in Santorini and the surrounding islands should be evacuated, and sea transport and fishing should be restricted.”

In a separate post, the professor explains the four phenomena observed during a volcanic eruption, three of which have occurred in Santorini.

“In Geophysics, there are four signs of volcanic eruptions:

  1. Shallow earthquakes and seismic storms
  2. Gas emissions
  3. Noises from the ground
  4. Ground swelling

Three of these have happened in Santorini. However, even if these symptoms are present, the eruption may not occur.
