A shot in the sternum was taken for treatment at the Wildlife Action facility, a flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) that had been found in an area of the municipality of Lagada by employees of the Central Macedonia Protected Areas Management Unit.
According to a statement by the organization, after an examination of the animal and an X-ray examination, it was determined that it was wounded by a firearm as a bucket was found in the area of the sternum.
This is an incident of poaching as the palm civet is a non-huntable species and is included in the Red List of Threatened Animals of Greece.
Seven incidents since January
According to the statement, poaching is one of the most serious threats to the country’s wildlife and the wildlife care centre very often receives animals wounded by a firearm.
As an indication, in January they had seven poaching incidents with wounded animals, namely, a buffalo, four hawks, a Mediterranean silverback, and a palm civet.
