Tourism: Arrivals in Greece reached 29.2 million in 2024

More than 2.6 million additional travelers visited Greece last year compared to 2023, marking a 9.7% increase

According to a periodic study by INSETE titled “International Air Arrivals: 2023-2024”, total arrivals in Greece reached 29.3 million in 2024, reflecting a +2.6 million (+9.7%) increase from the 26.7 million recorded in 2023.

Breakdown of International Air Arrivals in 2024:

  • Athens International Airport (AIA): 11.1 million passengers (up from 9.7 million in 2023, an increase of +1.5 million or +15.3%).
  • Thessaloniki Airport: 2.5 million passengers (up from 2.4 million in 2023, an increase of +91,000 or +3.9%).
  • Regional Airports: 15.8 million passengers (up from 14.8 million in 2023, an increase of +1.0 million or +7.0%).

Top Source Markets for Arrivals:

  • United Kingdom: 5.3 million arrivals (+7.2% or +351,000).
  • Germany: 4.8 million arrivals, the highest absolute increase (+389,000 or +8.8%).

Top 5 Markets per Airport:

  • Athens International Airport: Italy, Germany, UK, France, Cyprus.
  • Thessaloniki Airport: Germany, UK, Cyprus, Italy, Poland.
  • Regional Airports: UK, Germany, Italy, Poland, France.

Additional Highlights:

  • The top five airports accounted for 76% of total international arrivals in 2024.
  • Turkey showed the highest percentage growth (+25.3%), followed by Hungary (+25%) and the USA (+24.2%).
  • July was the peak month, with 5.0 million arrivals (16.9% of the total for 2024).
  • Data suggests an extension of the tourist season, with single-digit percentage growth from June to September, while other months saw double-digit increases.
