The Kremlin today dismissed the idea of a territorial exchange between Kyiv and Moscow as part of peace negotiations, following a proposal floated the previous day by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“It is impossible. Russia has never discussed and will never discuss an exchange involving its territory,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, assuring that Ukrainian forces currently holding part of Russia’s Kursk region “will be annihilated” or “driven out.”
Zelensky told The Guardian yesterday that, in an effort to end the war, he is considering offering Russia a territorial exchange, which would include pockets of the Kursk region currently under Ukrainian control.
Russia controls just under 20% of Ukraine—more than 112,000 square kilometers—while Ukraine holds around 450 square kilometers of Russia’s Kursk region.
