Detection and rescue of 68 migrants in Gavdos who were transported to Chania – Two arrests

The individuals arrested are 30 and 24 years old and were identified by the others as their smugglers

The 68 migrants who were spotted and rescued 33.3 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos on Friday afternoon (14/2) were transferred to Chania yesterday.

However, two foreign nationals, aged 30 and 24, were arrested after being identified by the rest as their smugglers.

The two individuals were arrested for violating Article 83 of Law 3386/2005 (“Illegal entry into the country”), Article 25 of Law 5038/2023 as currently in force (“Facilitation of illegal trafficking”) in conjunction with Article 45 of the Penal Code (“Co-perpetration”), as well as Article 306 of the Penal Code (“Exposure to danger”).

Under the coordination of the Hellenic Coast Guard Operations Center, the following medical evacuations were carried out for patients in urgent need of hospitalization:

  • A 53-year-old man, from the port of Serifos to the port of Syros, via the passenger-speedboat “Kyriarchos II”, registration N.N. 57.
  • A 37-year-old man, from the port of Naxos to the port of Syros, via a Coast Guard patrol boat.
  • An 80-year-old man, from the port of Tinos to the port of Syros, via a Coast Guard patrol boat.
  • A 17-year-old, from the port of Agios Kirykos to the port of Karlovasi in Samos, via a Coast Guard patrol boat.
  • An 82-year-old man, from the port of Agnontas in Skopelos to the port of Volos, via the speedboat-fishing vessel “Matthildi”, registration N.S. 45.
