Panathinaikos triumphs 3-2 over Fiorentina, takes lead in qualification battle

Determined Panathinaikos defeats Fiorentina 3-2, moves closer to qualification

Newsroom March 6 10:26

With Filip Đuričić putting on a sensational performance and the team delivering an extraordinary second-half display, Panathinaikos defeated a strong Fiorentina side 3-2, securing a crucial victory that brings them one step closer to the quarter-finals. The remarkable fightback and thrilling performance have given the team a significant boost ahead of the return leg in Italy.

Match Highlights:

Panathinaikos vs Fiorentina: How They Played

Coach Rui Vitória set up Panathinaikos with Dragovski in goal. The defensive line consisted of left-back Mladenović, right-back Kotsiras, and center-backs Arao and Ingason. The midfield trio was made up of Siopis, Maximovic, and Unai, while Đuričić played on the left wing, Tete on the right, and Świderski led the attack. Due to an injury, Vagianos replaced Kotsiras in the 35th minute. Fiorentina coach Raffaele Palladino started with Terracciano in goal, while the defensive trio was made up of Ranieri, Komuzo, and Moreno. Gosens played as a left-wing back, and Dodó was on the right. Mandragora, Fagioli, and Richardson formed the central midfield, while Beltrán and Kinn played as the forwards.

A Dream Start, Followed by a Nightmarish Three Minutes!

Panathinaikos could not have asked for a better start to the match. A brilliantly constructed attack from the left wing saw Đuričić pass to Maximovic, who then set up Świderski. The Polish striker scored a stunning goal to give the home side a 1-0 lead! Panathinaikos wasn’t finished there, though. In the 19th minute, Świderski controlled the ball beautifully, passed to Đuričić, and following a mistake from Fiorentina’s keeper, Terracciano, Maximovic pounced on the loose ball to make it 2-0! For the next 20 minutes, the hosts dominated and appeared set to control the match, but within three minutes, disaster struck, and Fiorentina pulled level!

Gosens, a major threat to Kotsiras, assisted the first goal in the 20th minute, crossing for Beltrán to score. Just three minutes later, in the 23rd minute, Gosens was once again involved, setting up Fagioli, whose shot deflected off Arao and found the back of the net, making it 2-2. In the 37th minute, Mandragora had a golden opportunity to put Fiorentina ahead but sent the ball straight into the body of the fallen Kinn. Panathinaikos had thrown away their 2-0 lead and was now at risk of falling behind due to defensive lapses!

Panathinaikos Dominates and Takes a Step Closer to the Quarter-Finals!

In the second half, Panathinaikos improved defensively, aided by the introduction of Vagianos, and fought hard in the midfield. They quickly regained control and found another swift goal. In the 55th minute, Siopis delivered a brilliant pass to Đuričić, who crossed from the left. Tete, with incredible precision, finished first time to give Panathinaikos a 3-2 lead! The hosts were energized and dominated play, creating more opportunities for a fourth goal. Świderski came close with a header in the 65th minute, while in the 70th, Terracciano made a brilliant save to deny Unai’s shot. In the 83rd minute, Đuričić struck the post! Despite pushing for a fourth, Panathinaikos couldn’t convert but held on to their 3-2 lead, taking a huge step toward qualification for the Conference League quarter-finals.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Karoł Świderski – The Polish forward opened the scoring with a spectacular finish and was also key in creating the second goal with a superb individual effort. An outstanding performance from the international striker.

ON TOP OF HIS GAME: Filip Đuričić – The Serbian star played a pivotal role in all three goals, tormenting Fiorentina’s defense with his incredible skill. Dodó and Moreno will surely have nightmares after facing him. Also deserving of praise are Tete and Siopis for their tireless performances across the pitch! For Fiorentina, Gosens stood out, providing the assists for both of their goals.

THE WEAK LINK: During the disastrous three-minute stretch (20′-23′) when Panathinaikos conceded two goals to Fiorentina, the defense was poor, with Kotsiras unable to handle Gosens’ threat and Arao at fault for the equalizer.

THE MISTAKE: In the 19th minute, Terracciano fumbled a weak shot from Đuričić, gifting Maximovic an easy tap-in for Panathinaikos’ second goal. A huge blunder from the experienced Fiorentina keeper.

THE REFEREE: The VAR rightly ruled out Fiorentina’s goal at the end of the first half for offside. Apart from that, referee Lambrechts didn’t make any major mistakes in this thrilling encounter at OAKA.

GAZZETTA’S FINAL VERDICT: Panathinaikos delivered an impressive performance, defeating Fiorentina 3-2, and will head to Florence next Thursday with strong hopes of securing qualification to the quarter-finals of the Conference League.
