Public transport workers have announced their participation in the 24-hour strike that GSEE and ADEDY have declared for today, Wednesday, April 9. According to the relevant announcements, the Metro, Electric and Tram will operate from 10 am to 5 pm, to transport the strikers to the rally.
Traffic on the roads has been increased since early in the morning with drivers facing problems in several parts of Attica.
In the strike, in which Federations, unions and associations of the private and public sectors participate, they demand, among other things, wage increases, Collective Labor Agreements, the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salaries in the Public Sector and measures to address punctuality and the housing crisis.
Calling for mass participation in the strike, the GSEE has scheduled its central rally at 11:00, in Klafthmonos Square in Athens, the ADEDY strike rally will take place in Syntagma, outside the Ministry of Finance, at 10:30 a.m. and the PAME strike rally will take place in Propylaia, at 10:30 and at the same time in Thessaloniki, at the Venizelos statue, while, at the same time, it is calling for participation in the other strike rallies in all cities.
Work stoppage on buses and trolleybuses
Specifically, buses and trolleybuses will operate from 9:00 to 21:00 due to work stops (from the start of the shift to 9:00 and from 21:00 to the end of their shift).
According to the announcements of both the OASA Workers’ Union and the ILPAP Workers’ Union, the workers are demanding: renewal of the fleet, recruitment of personnel, recognition of previous service for newly hired workers, salary increases, safe, modern and reliable public transport that meets the needs of workers and passengers.
Normally, buses are expected to run all day on the OASA lines that have been taken over by the KTEL.
Strike on the metro, electric and tram
According to an announcement by the workers at STA.SY., the metro, electric and tram will operate from 10:00 to 17:00, in order to facilitate the transition and return of citizens from the strike rallies.
The workers are demanding, among other things, the strengthening of public transport, staff recruitment, the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salary, collective bargaining and wage increases.
Strike in the Suburban Railway
The railway workers, including the Suburban Railway, will participate in a 24-hour strike.
The participation in the strike was announced by the Panhellenic Federation of Railways and Fixed-Track Vehicles, calling on its member unions to give a strong presence at the gathering of the General Confederation of Greek Workers on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Klafthmonos Square at 11:00 a.m., as well as at the gatherings that will be held by the local Labor Centers and Federations.
“As Railway Workers and METRO and TRAM workers, we will not stop saying “this is not going to go on” and we will not stop demanding:
-Restoration of free collective bargaining with wage increases – Recruitment of permanent staff with a stable employment relationship – permanentization of F.I.D. and employees with D.P.Y
-Completion, full restoration and re-operation of the entire railway network of the country (directly of the facilities affected by the natural disasters in the Thessaly region) – Re-operation of all tourist routes along the entire railway network – Immediate operation of safety systems
-Modernization of the facilities by replacing rolling stock and mechanical equipment where required, in order to improve working conditions to provide safety to employees
- Immediate recruitment in Fixed Transport (in understaffed critical specialties) and purchase of new rolling stock.
- Immediate operation of the new Organization “HELLENIC RAILWAYS” and implementation of the Organization Chart. “We will never stop demanding accountability for the tragic accident at TEMPI that changed railway history and the history of our country,” the Panhellenic Federation of Railways and Fixed-Track Vehicles emphasized in a statement.
What applies to taxis
The Taxi Drivers’ Association, in a statement, calls on taxi drivers to gather at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Klafthmonos Square, emphasizing, however, that participation in the strike is optional for everyone.
Ships tied up in ports
Coastal shipping ships will remain tied up today, as the Panhellenic Maritime Federation has decided to participate in the 24-hour nationwide strike of the GSEE. According to an announcement by the seafarers’ union, the mobilization concerns all categories of ships, starting at 00.01 in the morning and ending at 24.00 in the midnight, with the key demands being punctuality, the housing crisis, and collective bargaining.
The PNO also calls for the immediate implementation of the amendment of the terms and conditions for the beneficiaries of the unemployment benefit by the GENE (Naval Employment Office), as well as its increase from 350 euros, to the level of the unemployment benefit granted on land.
Increase in fines imposed for violation of working and rest hours of Seafarers.
Faithful observance and strict implementation of the legislation governing seafaring, both for working and rest hours and for double crews and especially in fast-moving vessels.
Immediate solution for the reduced organic compositions of Law 4150/2013 and especially in fast-moving vessels operating in the Adriatic.
As reported by the PNO, “at the meeting held with the then Minister of the Ministry of the Interior, Mr. Stylianides and service factors, the law of our demands had been recognized and there had been a commitment from the government that a solution would be provided, not because they are economic and union demands, but because three of the four are inextricably linked to the safety of maritime transport and the protection of human life at sea.
What applies to airplanes
Air traffic controllers will also participate in the strike. According to an announcement by the Greek Air Traffic Controllers Association (EEEKE), the following flights will be operated normally in order to cover the basic needs of society as a whole:
- Flights that fly over the Athens FIR.
- Flights that transport heads of state and prime ministers.
- Hellenic Air Force flights that participate in operational missions and scheduled exercises.
- Flights of aircraft facing unusual situations or in a state of emergency.
- Hospital flights.
- Humanitarian aid flights.
- Search and rescue aircraft flights.
Aegean and Olympic Air flights that are canceled or modified
Due to the participation of the Greek Air Traffic Controllers Association (EEEKE) in the 24-hour general strike announced by ADEDY on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 local time, Aegean and Olympic Air inform the passenger public that they will proceed with cancellations and modifications of all scheduled flights of the domestic and international network.
Specifically, on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, all scheduled flights on the domestic and international network are canceled, except for the following, which will take place with the following modifications:

Additionally, due to the strike, cancellations and modifications will also be made to scheduled flights on April 8th and 10th.

Passengers who have tickets on affected flights will receive a message from the company or the respective travel agencies through which their tickets were purchased.
It is recalled that passengers on all affected flights are already given the opportunity to make changes to their tickets, without reissue costs and fare difference, or to cancel their reservation and receive a credit voucher for future use, or to be refunded the full amount of the cost of the tickets that have been issued.

Sky express flights that are canceled or modified
Due to the participation of the Hellenic Air Traffic Controllers’ Union (EEEKE) in the 24-hour general strike announced by ADEDY on Wednesday, April 9, from 00:01 to 24:00 local time, SKY express will proceed with the cancellation and modification of all its scheduled flights on both the domestic and international networks.
