There has been considerable reaction on social media regarding a drone show that lit up central Athens last night.

The drone show was organized by a well-known sportswear company, and the images circulated widely across social media. However, questions were raised about how permission for such an event was granted. The images show the show taking place in the center of Athens, near the Acropolis, and many wondered whether and how the Ministry of Culture gave the relevant authorization.

According to sources from the Ministry, it was stated that “This may have been a drone show, or lasers, or something else,” adding: “The Ministry of Culture is already filing lawsuits against all responsible parties. In any case, it is under investigation with the Civil Aviation Authority whether they had a permit for drone use.”

The official statement from the Ministry of Culture reads:
“Regarding an advertisement by a sportswear company in which the Acropolis appears to be depicted, it is announced that: The competent services of the Ministry of Culture will file, within the day, a lawsuit against all responsible parties for violation of archaeological law. Additionally, the Ministry is in contact with the Civil Aviation Authority to investigate whether the drone overflight licensing procedure was followed in accordance with existing legislation.”
