The Court of Appeal is announcing its crucial decision regarding the suspension of the sentences it imposed on the 10 defendants found guilty of the deadly wildfire in Mati.

Earlier in court, the sentences for the 10 convicted individuals were announced. Specifically, total prison sentences amounting to up to 240 years were imposed. However, only 5 years of these sentences will actually be served.

More specifically, Konstantinos Angelopoulos, from whose yard the fire started, was sentenced to 3 years.

For Sotiris Terzoudis, Vasilis Matthaiopoulos, Ioannis Fostiéris, and Ioannis Kapakis, the total prison sentence before merging was 240 years (with 5 years to be served).

Additionally, for Christos Golfínos, Filippos Panteleákos, Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Damianos Papadopoulos, and Charalambos Chiónis, the sentence before merging amounted to 138 years.

It is reminded that yesterday, those found guilty of manslaughter by negligence and bodily harm in serial form were:

  • Sotiris Terzoudis, then Fire Department Chief,
  • Vasilis Matthaiopoulos, Deputy Chief,
  • Ioannis Fostiéris, Commander of ESKE (Unified Coordination Center),
  • Nikos Panagiotopoulos, Commander of Athens Fire Services,
  • Charalambos Chiónis, Commander of East Attica Fire Services,
  • Filippos Panteleákos, Director of the Civil Protection Operations Center,
  • Christos Golfínos, Director of emergency number 199,
  • Damianos Papadopoulos, Commander of Nea Makri Fire Station,
  • Ioannis Kapakis, then General Secretary,
  • and Konstantinos Angelopoulos, from whose yard the deadly fire began.

On the other hand, the following individuals were found not guilty:

  • Rena Dourou, then Regional Governor of Attica,
  • Ilias Psinakis, then Mayor of Marathon,
  • Antonis Palapatzis, Vaios Thanassias, and Dimitris Stergiou-Kapsalis (local government officials),
  • Christos Lambris, Director of Firefighting and Rescue,
  • Christos Drosopoulos, captain of the “FLOGA” vessel,
  • Georgios Portozoudis, Commander of YEMS (Mobile Emergency Medical Units),
  • Stefanos Kolokouris, then Commander of EMAK (Special Disaster Response Unit),
  • Charalambos Syrogiannis, former Deputy Commander of ELAS Airborne Division,
  • and Evangelos Bournous, then Mayor of Rafina.
