Weather: Thermometers hit 41°C – High temperatures to persist on Wednesday

Extremely high temperatures prevailed today, Tuesday, July 8, especially in the eastern mainland areas of Greece, where temperatures locally reached 41°C.

As shown on the map below (from the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr), 180 weather stations recorded maximum temperatures above 37°C.

Detailed Weather Forecast for Wednesday – EMY

  • Northwest Greece: A few clouds, locally increased in the morning with the possibility of brief local showers. Elsewhere in the country, generally clear weather. From midday, local cloud development is expected in the northern mainland, with the possibility of brief showers or isolated thunderstorms, mainly in Macedonia and Thrace.
  • Winds: West to northwest winds at 3–5 Beaufort, locally reaching 6 Beaufort in central and southern regions. In the afternoon, north winds will gradually strengthen in the Ionian Sea, mainland, and northern Aegean, reaching 6–7 Beaufort.
  • Temperatures: A slight drop is expected in western mainland Greece and the Ionian, but temperatures will remain high in the rest of the country.
    • Eastern mainland: 38–40°C, possibly 41°C
    • Rest of mainland: 35–37°C
    • Islands of the Eastern Aegean, Dodecanese, and Crete: 37–38°C, possibly 39°C
    • Other island regions: 33–36°C

MACEDONIA, THRACE

  • Weather: Mostly clear, local clouds from midday with possible brief showers or isolated thunderstorms.
  • Winds: West 3–5 Beaufort, turning north in the evening, reaching 6–7 Beaufort.
  • Temperature: 21–39°C. In Western Macedonia, minimum temps 3–4°C lower.

IONIAN ISLANDS, EPIRUS, WESTERN CENTRAL GREECE, WESTERN PELOPONNESE

  • Weather: Partly cloudy in Epirus in the morning with possible local showers. Generally clear elsewhere.
  • Winds: West-northwest 3–5, gradually 6–7 Beaufort.
  • Temperature: 22–34°C, up to 36°C inland. In Epirus, minimum temps 3–4°C lower.

EASTERN CENTRAL GREECE, EVIA, EASTERN PELOPONNESE

  • Weather: Clear.
  • Winds: West-northwest 3–5, gradually 6–7 Beaufort.
  • Temperature: 23–40°C, locally up to 41°C.

CYCLADES, CRETE

  • Weather: Clear.
  • Winds: West-northwest 4–6 Beaufort, increasing locally to 7 Beaufort in Crete.
  • Temperature: 23–36°C; in Crete, up to 38–39°C.

EASTERN AEGEAN ISLANDS – DODECANESE

  • Weather: Clear.
  • Winds:
    • North: Variable 3–4 Beaufort, turning northeast at night to 6–7 Beaufort.
    • South: West-northwest 4–5 Beaufort.
  • Temperature: 23–38°C.
