In New York at the UN headquarters, MEP Nicholas Faradouris has been York since yesterday, on the anniversary of the commemoration of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, 20 July 1974.
The Greek MEP will represent the European Parliament at the Global Sustainable Development Goals as the Rapporteur and author of the European Parliament’s position, which was adopted last week by a wide majority of 422 votes in favour out of 672 votes cast.
During his stay in the US, he will have scheduled meetings with US officials and representatives of the diaspora and on Tuesday, a private meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.
In a statement to ERT from New York, he said that “in my meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, in addition to the European Parliament’s positions on global sustainability, I will raise the Cyprus problem 51 years after the Turkish invasion and occupation and the illegal Turkish-Libyan Pact which has been submitted to the UN in a Memorandum of Understanding accompanied by maps”.
