The ongoing heatwave is gradually subsiding, with high temperatures persisting today (below 40°C), but a significant drop is expected from tomorrow. Rain is forecast over much of mainland Greece on Thursday.
Meteorologist Klearchos Marousakis spoke of a weather shift starting Wednesday, bringing a breath of cool air. However, on Thursday – and locally on Friday – rainfall, thunderstorms, and even hail are expected in some areas.
“We’ll get a break from the heat starting Wednesday, but with rain bringing problems in Northern Greece. A clash between two air masses will take place – a cold front from the northern Balkans will collide with the very warm air already in the country, leading to severe instability with heavy rain, intense lightning, and hail in central and northern regions,” he explained.
“On Thursday, rain and storms are expected from midday and into the evening, starting in the Peloponnese and moving northwards. Locally, these events may be intense, possibly causing minor flooding. Friday also requires caution, as the phenomena shift eastward and offshore,” he added.
