Summer travel rush underway: Roads, buses, and boats see major increases

Over 125,000 passengers and 340 departures from Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio in the first 3 days of August

As of Friday morning, the biggest wave of August holidaymakers has begun its summer exodus. The port of Piraeus is packed with travelers, and ferry occupancy is nearing 100%.

Where Traffic is Building Now – Skaramangas Exit, Athens Avenue, Kifissos, Attiki Odos, and Piraeus in Red

As of a few minutes before 4:00 PM, several key roadways around Athens are experiencing significant congestion:

  • Kifisias Avenue: Heavy traffic from Halandri toward the city center, especially near Psychiko. Also slow-moving from Agia Paraskevi into Athens.
  • Katechaki Avenue: Congestion from Kaisariani to Kifisias—most of the stretch is in the red.
  • Alexandras and Patission Avenues: Major delays heading into the city center.
  • Athens-Corinth National Road: Traffic is heavy from Skaramangas through the western suburbs.
  • Athens Avenue: Congestion from Haidari toward the city center.
  • Syngrou Avenue: Traffic is building on the southbound lanes heading toward Faliro and Piraeus.
  • Iera Odos and Liosion Street: Large sections are experiencing heavy congestion.

Moderate congestion is also being reported:

  • On parts of Kifisias and Mesogeion Avenues.
  • At the entrance to Attiki Odos from Lavrio and Markopoulo toward Peania.

Over 125,000 Passengers and 340 Ferry Departures in First 3 Days of August

Passenger and ferry traffic has been exceptionally high at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio in the first three days of August, as thousands of holidaymakers head for the Aegean Islands and the Saronic Gulf during the first major vacation wave of the summer.

According to port authority data, between Friday, August 1st and Sunday, August 3rd, there will be 340 ferry departures, including routes to the Saronic Gulf, with total passenger traffic estimated to exceed 125,000.

Piraeus Port – Ferries to Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Crete (Gate E7)

  • Friday, August 1: 25 sailings – 30,830 passengers
  • Saturday, August 2: 28 sailings – 33,901 passengers
  • Sunday, August 3: 27 sailings – 26,751 passengers
  • Monday, August 4: 24 sailings – 20,597 passengers

Piraeus Port – Saronic Gulf Lines

  • Friday, August 1: 53 sailings (32 high-speed vessels, 21 conventional)
  • Saturday, August 2: 48 sailings (30 high-speed, 18 conventional)
  • Sunday, August 3: 53 sailings (31 high-speed, 22 conventional)

Rafina Port

  • Friday, August 1: 9 sailings – 8,656 passengers
  • Saturday, August 2: 9 sailings – 8,025 passengers
  • Sunday, August 3: 9 sailings – 5,750 passengers

In addition, there are 4 daily departures to Marmari.

Lavrio Port

  • Saturday, August 2: 8 sailings – 3,800 passengers
  • Sunday, August 3: 12 sailings – 2,800 passengers
