Man missing for 28 years found in a glacier in Pakistan

"The body was intact. The clothes weren't even torn," said the shepherd who found him - Missing person case solved since 1997 - How a body can be kept in perfect condition in a glacier

Newsroom August 6 12:52

An incredible incident has occurred in the remote and mountainous Kohistan region of Pakistan, where the body of a man who had been missing for 28 years was found intact inside a melted glacier.

Specifically, the BBC reports, a shepherd accidentally found the man’s body, which was in extremely good condition, with his clothes perfectly preserved, in the so-called “Lady’s Valley” in the east of the country. “What I saw was incredible. The body was intact. The clothes weren’t even torn,” the shepherd who found the body, Omar Khan, told BBC Urdu.

An identity card with the name Naseeruddin was found along with the body. Police were able to locate a man who allegedly disappeared in the area in June 1997 after falling into a crevasse crack during a snowstorm.

This region has seen a decrease in snowfall in recent years, exposing glaciers to direct sunlight, which results in them melting faster. Experts say the discovery of the corpse shows how climate change has accelerated the melting of glaciers.

Once police confirmed it was Naseeruddin, locals began offering more information, Khan added. Naseeruddin had a wife and two children. On the day he disappeared, he was travelling on horseback with his brother, Kathiruddin.

Police said a domestic dispute had forced the two men to leave their home.

Kathiruddin told BBC Urdu that they had arrived in the valley that morning and, around noon, his brother entered a cave. When he did not return, Kathiruddin searched for him inside the cave and went to seek help from others in the area to continue the search. However, they never found him.

How is it possible to maintain a body in perfect condition 28 years later ;

When a human body falls into a glacier, the extreme cold freezes it quickly, preventing decomposition, said Muhammad Bilal, a professor and head of the Department of Environment at Comsats University in Islamabad.

Muhammad Bilal, the head of the Department of Biology and Science at the University of Jakarta, is a professor at the University of Jakarta.

The body is then mummified due to the lack of moisture and oxygen in the glacier.
