Newsroom August 11 01:22

In Crete and specifically in the White Mountains of Chania, is the deepest cave in the country, the cave of Gourgoutakas with a depth of 1,100 meters.

As zarpanews.gr reports, members of the “Gourgoutakas – Lion 2025” expedition conducted a dive reaching a depth of 1,100 meters, marking the deepest dive ever recorded in a Greek cave. The expedition, as the participants announced on social media, was a complete success after a long period of planning and preparation.

The depth of the cave Gurguthaka is a record and ranks 43rd in the world.

The morphology of the cave includes steep vertical shafts, intersecting arches, and impressive stalagmites and stalactites, elements that make its exploration extremely challenging and only possible for people with specialized equipment and experience.

The cave of Gurguthaka was discovered in 1990 by the Cataamaran Speleological Expedition of the Catamaran Group from Montbéliard, France.

On Wednesday (13/8), in Pemonia, new information about the cave and the expedition is expected to be presented, and the new exact depth will be announced.
