The annual guide is published by a group of inspectors who anonymously evaluate pizzerias in the United States and worldwide. Each new list of 100 total recommendations focuses primarily on the quality of the finished product, while taking into account service and atmosphere. Italians, of course, are usually furious with these awards, as they maintain a great distrust of anything “their own” outside of Italy, but this guide is recognized as the ultimate authority on the best pizzerias in the world.
It is edited by Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro, and Albert Sapere, renowned gastronomic critics with an international audience, who even announced the results at the Teatro Mercadante in Naples. This year’s winner is again Anthony Mangieri’s Una Pizza Napoletana, based in New York, but this time sharing the first place with I Masanielli by Francesco Martucci, located in Caserta, Italy. The second place is still a clear proof of how pizza has become part of the tasting habits of different cultures, as we meet The Pizza Bar on 38th in Tokyo. On the other hand, of course, we should not forget that the chefs in most of the award-winning cases are of Italian origin, but this is not the norm.
