A sub-lieutenant of the Hellenic Coast Guard was arrested on the afternoon of Thursday, October 9, in the area of Corinth by the Internal Affairs Service of Security Forces, on charges of embezzling fuel from official tankers and subsequently reselling it illegally.
Additionally, two civilians (aged 47 and 54) were arrested, identified as buyers of the stolen fuel. A 28-year-old man is also included in the case file.
They face various charges including embezzlement and repeated breach of duty, acceptance and handling of stolen goods, and violations of laws regarding weapons and narcotics.
How the Scheme Worked
According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the investigation began after a tip-off. It was revealed that the Coast Guard officer, assigned as a driver of official fuel tankers, had systematically embezzled fuel since at least June 2025.
He would underfill tanks or vessels during refueling, storing the excess fuel in jerry cans and tanks hidden at his main and vacation homes in Corinth.
Later, during late night or early morning hours, he would discreetly transport the fuel to a shop owned by the 54-year-old, who purchased it for about €0.80 per liter for use in his business.
More Individuals Involved
It was found that the 28-year-old, a relative of the 54-year-old, was aware of the illegal trade, and in one instance requested fuel from the officer for use in another family-owned store.
Additionally, the 47-year-old was found to be involved after he picked up 23 jerry cans of fuel from the officer’s home on October 8, 2025.
