Newsroom October 16 04:51

The confrontation began over Velopoulos’ asset declarations and escalated with inappropriate remarks from the leader of the Greek Solution party. – Watch video of the incident.

A heated exchange broke out in Parliament at midday between Kyriakos Velopoulos and Dimitris Kairidis, following the recent publication of politicians’ asset declarations, with the Greek Solution leader engaging in inappropriate behavior.

Specifically, while the leader of the Greek Solution was speaking from the podium during the debate on foreign policy, the New Democracy MP shouted from the benches: “Will you bring the money from Germany?” referring to Velopoulos’ wife’s bank deposits.

At that point, Velopoulos responded: “Listen, sir, I’ll answer you with one expression. The money is taxed in Greece, it belongs to my wife who has been living there for years, okay? I don’t interfere in your family matters, don’t continue. You, who said Pontians are Turks, have no right to speak. You, who said we are descendants of Turks, have no right to speak. Enough with the jokes.”

Kairidis continued shouting from the benches, addressing both Velopoulos and other MPs. The presiding officers tried to restore order, but in vain. Velopoulos responded again, saying: “Poor child, you’ll lose the elections and remain out of office; you won’t even become an MP.”

The New Democracy MP apologized to the presiding officers, noting that Velopoulos was not responding. Olga Gerovasili replied that this was not a dialogue. Velopoulos, having engaged in further inappropriate behavior criticized by other MPs, continued on a personal level: “When you argue with a fool, you answer foolishly,” pointing at Dimitris Kairidis. “This gentleman, who is paid by the public, by my companies, with 500 employees and millions in revenue, will tell me what I should do?”

Following his usual approach, Velopoulos also attacked Proto Thema once again.

Closing

Speaking to journalists after the incident, Kairidis said: “The last thing this country needs is vulgar language and crude rhetoric. He lost his composure and hurled insults at me and the ND parliamentary group.”

The ND MP added that Velopoulos’ outburst was triggered by a question about his wife’s bank deposits in Germany. “Velopoulos considers himself a patriot while questioning our patriotism. Why does he have deposits in Germany according to his latest asset declaration? He should bring the money to Greece. Why all this agitation?”
