A stir broke out a few days ago when reports in foreign media spoke of a leak of 183 million Gmail accounts and passwords last April — something that Google, however, denied.
Specifically, the reports were based on a statement from the creator of the “Have I Been Pwned” database, Troy Hunt, who said the breach involved website addresses, email addresses and passwords.
Google said in a statement that there has been no leak with Gmail users being protected.
“Reports of a “Gmail security breach affecting millions of users” are false. Gmail’s defenses are strong and users remain protected,” Google said in a social media update.
It pointed out that “The inaccurate reports stem from a misunderstanding of infostealer databases, which regularly collect various credential theft activities that occur online. They do not reflect a new attack targeting a specific person, tool or platform.”
