Vassilis Spanoulis will continue as head coach of the Greek national basketball team, setting his sights on the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
The Greek coach guided the national team to a bronze medal, bringing Greece back to the podium for the first time in 16 years. Ensuring his continuation at the helm was a top priority for the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), a wish also publicly expressed by Giannis Antetokounmpo after Greece’s victory over Finland in the EuroBasket 2025 third-place game.
EOK and Spanoulis reached an agreement for their continued collaboration, aiming to prepare the team for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar — a deal that also received approval from AS Monaco, where Spanoulis is under contract.
Since taking over as head coach in 2023, Spanoulis has led Greece to appearances at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and EuroBasket 2025.
Official Statement from the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK):
“The Hellenic Basketball Federation is pleased to announce that Vassilis Spanoulis will continue to serve as head coach of the Men’s National Team.
Coach Spanoulis will be present and will lead the team’s efforts in the upcoming qualification ‘windows’ for the 2027 FIBA World Cup, to be held in Thessaloniki and Portugal.
The Federation wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Coach Spanoulis for his commitment and passion, as well as to the management of AS Monaco for their understanding and excellent cooperation, which made the continuation of his tenure with the National Team possible.
EOK is confident that Greek clubs — particularly the two EuroLeague representatives — will show the same understanding of the importance of these games and the national sporting mission they represent.
Finally, the Federation assures that, recognizing the demanding schedules of the players, it will continue to provide the best possible conditions to minimize their physical strain.”
