“Turn off the vehicle, get down”: The moment of the arrest of Katrinis’ 16-year-old son in Chalandri

A chase had preceded the arrest after the minor ignored signals to stop – In the video brought to light by protothema.gr, a plainclothes Security vehicle is seen stopping in front of the car and ordering the minors to get out

Newsroom December 16 05:46

This is the moment when officers of the OPKE police unit immobilize, on Apostolopoulou Street in Chalandri, the private vehicle driven by the 16-year-old son of PASOK MP Michalis Katrinis, in which five other minors were passengers.

In the video document revealed by protothema.gr, the plainclothes Security vehicle is seen stopping in front of the car and ordering the minors to get out of the vehicle.

A police officer shouts via the radio to the driver, “turn off the vehicle,” and orders him to step outside. As soon as the suspicious car is immobilized, two OPKE officers move toward the side of the youths and pull them out of the vehicle.

They shout “down, down” and then handcuff them, while during the check of the minors and the car, police officers locate a kitchen knife that the arrested 15-year-old had on him.

Watch the video:

A cinematic-style chase had preceded the arrest between the car driven by the PASOK MP’s son and OPKE vehicles, as the underage driver failed to stop when signaled for inspection on Mesogeion Avenue.

Instead, he accelerated, turned onto Tzavella Street and initially entered Sfaktirias Street the wrong way, and then Apostolopoulou Street, where police officers immobilized the vehicle.

Misdemeanor charges against Katrinis’ son and his 15-year-old friend
Criminal prosecution was brought, as applicable, against the MP’s son and one of his friends for the offenses of dangerous driving that could have endangered human life, disobedience, and illegal possession of a weapon. The defendants were released and a specific trial date will be set.

Michalis Katrinis: The law applies to everyone
Earlier, Michalis Katrinis made a post regarding the arrest of his 16-year-old son, confirming that the minor was driving without a license and stressing that “the law applies to everyone.”

In his message, he describes the act as “unjustified and illegal,” expresses his “devastation” as a father, and states that he assumes “the responsibility that falls to him, without half-words or evasions,” emphasizing that, as parents, they will stand by their child “with persuasion, reason, and love”:

“My younger son was driving without a license. An unjustified and illegal act. The law applies to everyone. As a father, I feel devastated and I assume the responsibility that falls to me, without half-words or evasions. As parents, we stand by our child with persuasion, reason, and love. The law applies to everyone. Without exception.”

The timeline
The incident occurred on Monday evening, when the 16-year-old allegedly failed to comply with a police stop signal from an OPKE unit that spotted him in the area, resulting in a chase until his immobilization in Chalandri. According to the same briefing, in his attempt to escape he allegedly also drove the wrong way down one-way streets.

During the subsequent check, police officers found that the 16-year-old did not have a driver’s license, while five other minors were also in the vehicle. One of them, a 15-year-old, was allegedly carrying a kitchen knife.

A case file was compiled for the incident. According to the same information, the mother of the 16-year-old was also arrested for neglect of a minor and was later released following a verbal order by a prosecutor.

The four other underage passengers were also released, while prosecution was brought against the 16-year-old and the 15-year-old.
