Erfan Soltani has not been sentenced to death, Iranians now say

According to the statement carried by Iranian state media, the country's judges clarified that the charge he faces is not punishable by the death penalty

Newsroom January 15 09:10

26-year-old Erfan Soltani, the young Iranian man who was due to be hanged by the Tehran regime for taking part in recent protests, has not been sentenced to death, Iranian judiciary officials said today.

According to the statement carried by Iran’s state media, the country’s judges clarified that Soltani is accused of “plotting against the country’s internal security and propaganda activities against the regime,” but that the death penalty does not apply to such charges if they are confirmed by a court.

Soltani is reportedly being held at the Karaj Central Penitentiary, with his family stating in the previous hours that they had been told that his execution had been postponed.

Speaking to the US Fox News network, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier said, “There is no plan to hang him. Hanging is out of the question.”
