United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will ultimately not be able to travel to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos due to a “severe cold,” a spokesperson said today in Geneva.

“The Secretary-General will unfortunately have to cancel his participation in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos,” which was scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, because he “caught a severe cold,” Rolando Gómez said at a press conference in Geneva.

After a stop in London on Saturday, Guterres traveled to Switzerland to meet with his special representatives and envoys who are taking part in their annual meeting. “That meeting has now concluded and he is on his way back to New York,” Gómez said.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he will travel to Davos only if the documents on security guarantees with the United States and a prosperity plan are ready to be signed there.

Zelensky, who had been expected to take part in the World Economic Forum today, said he needed to remain in Kyiv to help deal with the aftermath of a major Russian airstrike overnight, which knocked out heating supplies to around 50% of apartment buildings in the city.

“Of course, in this case I choose Ukraine, not the economic forum, but everything can change at any moment. Because it is very important for Ukrainians for this war to end,” Zelensky told reporters in response to questions on the matter.
