Efforts to ease Attica’s chronic traffic congestion, with particular emphasis on the Kifissos highway, were discussed on Tuesday during a closed-door briefing and policy meeting held at Maximos Mansion under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

According to government sources, the proposals presented were structured on three levels: short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures.

Short-term measures include steps to reduce — though not fully ban — heavy truck traffic on the Kifissos highway, as well as improved management of daily incidents that frequently cause major delays.

Medium-term proposals include the introduction of smart traffic lights, a system that has already delivered positive results in Thessaloniki and is now being examined for implementation in Attica. In addition, a significant increase in the frequency of public transport services across Attica is expected by the end of 2026.

Government officials noted that the proposals presented will now be further processed by the competent ministries, to be finalized and presented publicly in the near future.
