A significant energy upgrade at SOS Children’s Villages Greece has been completed with the support of The Hellenic Initiative (THI), which contributed $60,000 toward the installation and modernization of clean energy systems. The initiative aims both to reduce operating costs and to improve the environmental footprint of care facilities hosting vulnerable children.

The project covered three different locations, enhancing energy efficiency, strengthening sustainability, and creating a safer, more environmentally responsible living space for children and staff.

At the SOS Children’s Village in Vari, the existing photovoltaic park was fully renovated and upgraded. Outdated components were replaced and the system modernized, substantially improving energy performance, lowering operational costs, and reinforcing the long-term sustainability of the facility.

In Plagiari, Thessaloniki, the energy supply systems were upgraded to support heat pumps and enable a gradual shift away from oil. The transition to cleaner energy sources is expected to significantly reduce emissions, improve energy security, and deliver long-term savings.

Meanwhile, in Alexandroupoli, a new photovoltaic park was developed, covering the facility’s energy needs through renewable sources for the first time. The installation modernizes the local care units, supports services offered to the community, and serves as a model for sustainable energy transition in the region.

“Sustainability is not only an environmental choice – it is a deeply social investment,” said Andreas C. Kramvis, Member of the Board of Directors of The Hellenic Initiative. “Through our support of SOS Children’s Villages, we aim to strengthen care structures that offer safety and opportunity to children, while reducing their energy footprint. It is an example of how smart infrastructure can create lasting social impact.”

George Protopapas, General Director of SOS Children’s Villages Greece, emphasized that environmental responsibility is closely linked to the organization’s social mission. “For SOS Children’s Villages, caring for children means creating a safe, modern and sustainable environment. Our collaboration with The Hellenic Initiative enables us to reduce energy costs and reinvest valuable resources where they matter most – in children, families and local communities,” he noted.

The projects form part of SOS Children’s Villages’ broader sustainability strategy, where environmental upgrades translate directly into social benefits. By lowering energy expenses, the organization can redirect savings toward expanding support for children and families.

The long-standing partnership with The Hellenic Initiative demonstrates how targeted investments in sustainable infrastructure can deliver measurable environmental gains, financial efficiency and meaningful social impact.
