Mojtaba Khamenei escaped death by seconds: As missiles were hitting his father’s palace, he had stepped out into the garden

An audio recording obtained by The Telegraph from a conversation between the head of Ali Khamenei’s office and senior clerics and commanders of the Revolutionary Guards describes what happened inside the Iranian supreme leader’s compound when it was bombed

Newsroom March 16 09:38

A leaked audio clip presented by The Telegraph reveals that Mojtaba Khamenei was targeted in the same attack that killed his father and other members of Iran’s leadership, but at that moment he had stepped outside “to do something” shortly before Israeli Blue Sparrow ballistic missiles struck the palace at 9:32 a.m. local time on February 28.

A speech delivered by Mazaher Hosseini, head of protocol at Ali Khamenei’s office, to senior clerics and commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) provides the first detailed account of what happened inside the supreme leader’s compound when it came under fire.

Hosseini revealed that Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded in the leg during the attacks, while his wife and son were killed instantly and his brother-in-law was decapitated.

The body of Mohammad Shirazi, head of Khamenei’s military office, was also “dismembered.” Only “a few kilos of flesh” could be used to identify him, Hosseini told the meeting, which took place on March 12 in the Kolhak district of Tehran.

Mojtaba Khamenei lived in the same compound as his father in the Iranian capital. The complex also housed a religious hall where Ali Khamenei delivered speeches, as well as the homes of his other children.

On February 28, Ali Khamenei and senior security officials had gathered for a meeting when missiles struck the compound. Mohammad Pakpour, head of the IRGC, Aziz Nasirzadeh, Iran’s defense minister, and Ali Khamenei were among those killed.

Hosseini is heard in the recording saying:
“God’s will was that Mojtaba went out to the courtyard to do something and then return. He was outside and was going up to the upper floor when the building was struck by a missile. His wife, Mrs. Haddad, died instantly.”

Hosseini said Mojtaba suffered only “a light injury to his leg.” According to him, the attacks simultaneously targeted multiple locations within the office compound and appeared intended to eliminate the entire Khamenei family.

“These devils had planned to strike several locations within the office complex—one of them was the residence of the Supreme Leader,” he said. “They hit this location with three missiles.”

Mojtaba’s residence on the upper floor was also struck, as was the residence below it belonging to his brother-in-law Misbah al-Huda Bagheri Kani, and the home of his brother Mostafa and his wife.

Among other things, Hosseini said:
“The enemy knew that while it was striking the Supreme Leader, it was also striking him, because they knew he would replace those who had been killed. When new commanders were appointed, they would have the opportunity to influence the agitators. They blew him to pieces — they couldn’t find anything of him, and in the end they found a few kilos of flesh and identified it as his body.”
