The weather in Greece is expected to undergo a noticeable change in the coming hours, as two disturbances moving toward the country are predicted to bring rain, strong winds, and snowfall, primarily from Thursday to Friday, according to meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas.
Satellite images shared in a post by the former director of EMY show that the system affecting Greece is already “just around the corner.” The country is expected to be influenced by two disturbances, leading to a significant change in weather from today, with the most pronounced effects expected from Thursday through Friday.
Of particular interest are the two systems moving from the Gulf of Sirte and the Strait of Sicily. These systems are anticipated to bring not only substantial rainfall but also snowfall.
There is a small but real chance that snow could temporarily fall even in semi-mountainous areas of Central and Northern Greece from Thursday to Friday, with clarity on this expected in the coming days. In the mountains, however, snowfall is considered almost certain and may be significant in some areas.
Showers and Strong Winds in the Aegean
Rain today and tomorrow, Wednesday, is expected to be mostly local. From Thursday onward, however, precipitation will become more widespread, affecting the Aegean and Crete.
At the same time, winds in the Aegean will strengthen significantly, reaching gale force levels of up to 8 Beaufort, intensifying the feeling of cold.
Current indications suggest that this period of instability could persist beyond March 24, with new rainfall affecting many regions. Spring will, by all appearances, require a little more patience to arrive.
Medium-Term Forecast for Athens
In Athens, the ten-day forecast begins with relatively mild weather and maximum temperatures around 16°C. From midweek, however, a noticeable drop in temperature is expected, Kolydas said in a recent post.
The coldest period is expected from Thursday to Saturday, with maximum temperatures around 13–14°C and minimums dropping to 10–11°C or lower, accompanied by increasing chances of rain.
Afterward, the weather will gradually improve, with fewer disturbances and more sunny periods. By the end of the forecast period, temperatures are expected to rise again to 17–18°C, although passing clouds and localized precipitation cannot be ruled out.
