Diaspora schools commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi

Schools of the Greek diaspora are taking part in an international online event titled “Greek-language Education Schools honor Messolonghi – 200 years since the Exodus”, which will take place on April 24, 2026, from 18:00 to 20:45 (Greece time), featuring theatrical performances, narrations, visual art, and digital presentations

Newsroom April 21 05:03

The 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi is gaining an international dimension through an important initiative of Greek-language education. The Coordinating Offices of Education Abroad, in collaboration with the Department of Greek Education of the Holy Archdiocese of America, are organizing an online event dedicated to one of the most significant events in Greek history.

The event aims to bring together students, educators, and members of the global Greek community from around the world.

The goal of this initiative is to highlight the crucial role of education in preserving and passing on this historical memory, especially to younger generations of the diaspora, connecting history with modern Greek identity on a global scale. The program also carries strong educational and symbolic value, combining institutional perspectives, academic documentation, and experiential student expression.

The prestige of the event is reinforced by the prominent figures delivering greetings, including Archbishop of America Elpidophoros, Greek Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki, Secretary General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy Maira Myrogianni, Mayor of Messolonghi Spyros Diamantopoulos, Panagiotis Passas (Head of International and European Affairs in Education), Konstantinos Velentzas (President of the Society for Hellenism and Philhellenism / Philhellenism Museum), and Stella Kokoli (President of the Federation of Greek Educators in America).

History through education

The keynote speaker will be distinguished historian Maria Efthymiou, who is expected to highlight the significance of the Exodus of Messolonghi not only as a military and historical event but also as a symbol of freedom and self-sacrifice with global impact, linking the past with contemporary collective identity.

Diaspora schools present the Exodus of Messolonghi

The contribution of schools is at the heart of the event. Each Coordinating Office of Education, along with the Department of Greek Education of the Archdiocese of America, will present 5–7 minute videos showcasing student and teacher activities, demonstrating how the younger generation creatively approaches historical memory.

Through theatrical performances, storytelling, visual arts, and digital presentations, diaspora students will convey the message of Messolonghi in a modern, international context.

Special importance is given to the participation of schools from the Sacred City of Messolonghi and Agrinio, which will present a joint video, linking the place of historical sacrifice with the global Greek community and adding authenticity and local perspective to the event.

The event is held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Archdiocese of America, and the Municipality of Messolonghi—highlighting the importance of the anniversary not only for Greece but for Hellenism worldwide.

The event will be hosted and presented by ERT journalist Elina Kolyva and will be streamed live on YouTube, allowing audiences worldwide to watch. Viewers will also be able to participate actively through comments and questions, enhancing the interactive nature of the initiative.
